The UAE Cybersecurity Council has warned about three unexpected methods that could compromise personal data and devices: free streaming sites, untrusted public charging ports, and malicious ransomware. The council highlighted that free streaming platforms may serve as entry points for malware targeting users’ devices and personal information.
The council emphasized the need to strengthen digital defenses and raise awareness of cybersecurity risks, recommending measures such as regular system and application updates, minimizing personal information sharing, using secure networks, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, regular data backups, and trusted antivirus programs.
Free Streaming Sites
Untrusted streaming and download sites are major gateways for malware and data theft. The council noted that 70% of users are unaware of these risks. Data shows that over 90% of music files shared on illegal networks are unauthorized, with 216 billion visits to piracy sites by the end of 2024, leading to around one million device infections.
Untrusted Charging Ports
Public charging stations can contain hidden malware capable of stealing personal data. Ignoring safety measures may result in password theft or installation of malicious programs, often indicated by battery drain, app slowdowns, system crashes, or unusual messages. Recommended precautions include carrying a personal charger, avoiding public ports, enabling two-factor authentication, and using biometric security features.
Malicious Ransomware
Ransomware encrypts data and restricts access, spreading through suspicious links and websites. It can extort victims financially by demanding payments to restore files, often through deceptive messages or files disguised as personal or important documents.
The council stressed that compliance with national cybersecurity policies and cultivating a culture of data protection are vital responsibilities shared by all sectors and individuals to keep the UAE’s digital space safe and secure.
